Sticking locks are no joke! We often get locked out at the most inopportune time. Locks are mechanical and need lubricating to allow the tumblers to function properly or they will get stuck and freeze. Or at least that is an implied term under the normal circumstances here in Austin Texas. To assist with those sticky locks, Zinger Hardware recommends several products from Lock Ease to Graphite dependent on the type of lock and the elements that the lock is exposed.
However, it is important to know how to apply the lubricant as well. Recently I had a customer who complained her key was not working properly and wanted a solution to the sticky lock. Our clever staff recommended a spray lubricant after determining that the lock may have some small debris and dirt in the cylinder. What we failed to explain is that you should only spray a small amount and then insert the key working the key back and forth to deliver the lubricant throughout the lock’s cylinder.
What did happen was terrifying to the customer! Instead of using a small amount, she sprayed the entire can into the cylinder. The compressed gas within the canister reaches an extremely cold temperature once released and the lock became 100% frozen. Yes, she was now locked out of her home and she had to wait for Olav to thaw before she could enter!
