I found my blog “Melt the Brain of a Baby” required a more in depth look at some of the products we have found at Zinger Hardware to be Clever Solutions to this Everyday problem. If you will allow us to share some of findings covered by the article “Ten steps to prevent infection from mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus”, please read on!

Step 1) Apply a body lotion or spray to deter mosquitoes from attacking. The use of natural sprays and body lotions to prevent exposed skin areas from being attacked from mosquitoes is your first line of defense. Think of it as new fragrance of 2016.

Applying a natural spray or lotion derived from oils that naturally repel mosquitoes should be your first line of protection. The following products have been tested by our staff at Zinger Hardware and offer an effective mosquito repellent. Please keep in mind that each person will react differently to oils and how that will affect a response from a blood lusting mosquito.

Note* If you experience any reaction to a bug repellent please seek medical advice and discontinue the use of the product.

SKEETER SCREEN a DEET free spray that is offered in a 4fl oz. bottle. Based on the disclosure the product is DEET free * Pyrethrin free * Alchohol free * non combustible * and has the benefit of not staining your clothing.

SWAMP GATOR a natural insect repellent that is DEET free spray offered in a 6 fl oz bottle. The product contains Geraniol * rosemary oil * Peppermint oil * Geranium oil * and a smooth dry texture when applied. No apparent discoloration is noted to clothing has been noted by our staff during testing.

BITER FIGHTER a natural DEET free Mosquito + Insect repellent spray that is offered in a 4 fl oz bottle and in 2 scents Cedar and Cedar with Lemongrass. This repellent is made of plant based organic ingredients. Based on the label it is safe to use on the entire family including infants, children, and pets. Biter Fighter contains food grade ingredients.
There are two other alternatives that can be found in products that have been tested to repel mosquitoes. The first Picaridin, produced by Bayer, is designed to resemble the compound found in the black pepper plant. The second is Lemon Eucalyptus which when refined is known as citronella. Both have potential side-affects as by their warnings and are not recommended to be used on young children and infants. Sawyer brands produces a Picaridin lotion and spray but is not intended to be used on a daily basis.
Consumer reports posted the following short article that is worth noting when applying any bug repellent. I feel they have covered all of the basics and it is important to take caution. Any lotion or spray that can be applied to the skin may cause irritation of the eyes and skin.

How to safely use insect repellents:

Proper use is essential, even with safer products. That means:• Apply repellents only to exposed skin or clothing (as directed on the product label). Never put it on under clothing. Use just enough to cover and only for as long as needed; heavy doses don’t work better.• Don’t apply repellents over cuts, wounds, or irritated skin.• When applying to your face, spray first on your hands, then rub in, avoiding your eyes and mouth, and using sparingly around ears.• Don’t let young children apply. Instead, put it on your own hands, then rub it on. Limit use on children’s hands, because they often put their hands in their eyes and mouths.• Don’t use near food, and wash hands after application and before eating or drinking.• At the end of the day, wash treated skin with soap and water, and wash treated clothing in a separate wash before wearing again.
Thank you for taking precautions with your personal health and that of your family and friends. Please share your Clever Solutions to Everyday Problems and help us to keep others informed.
